Château d’Archambault
Cours, Noyers sur Serein
Burgundy, France

Presiding over a splendid 3-hectare (7.4 acres) park, this former hunting lodge from the 19th century offers an ideal resting point from which to explore Noyers sur Serein, one of the most beautiful villages of Burgundy. With its wisteria-decorated façade, its ravishing potager garden surrounded by lawn, its 100-year-old sequoia, and the distinct cachet of its outbuildings…..multiple attributes combine to make this château a haven of peace. The interior’s simple, modern decor gives pride of place to the building’s beautiful volumes: these are immense in the 18-windowed reception rooms and in Room 2, which incorporates the pretty watch tower in its design. For a more intimate atmosphere and a more contemporary decor, choose Room 5, designed for a family and tucked away in the eaves. The welcome and ambience at the château are pleasant and relaxed.

MAISONS D’HÔTE DE CHARME, FRANCE, 2008
Guide de Charme, Editions Payot & Rivages

A 19th-century maison de maître that once belonged to Napoleon III’s chef, the Château d’Archambault is set above a small bucolic valley through which winds the lovely river Serein.

Completely restored in 1996, this stunning character property is set within 3 hectares (7.4 acres) of grounds encircled by the original stone wall. The grounds offer a variety of pleasures, from open lawn with mature shade trees to a wooded area with gravel paths for strolling. At the back of the house and facing the winter garden conservatory lies a traditional, formally planted vegetable garden, or potager. A gracious country house with enormous cachet, the château offers a way of living that is both elegant and utterly relaxed.

The outbuildings include a renovated caretaker’s cottage currently used as a short-term rental property; a greenhouse; two 18th-century pigeonniers, one of which is fully restored; an unrestored kennel that once housed 17 hunting dogs; various workshops and storage areas; a beautiful unrestored barn; and a stunning 60 m2 (645.83 square foot) chais (semi-submerged wine cellar) with its storage attic. The property offers one hectare (2.471 acres) of currently unexploited vineyard land.

The adjacent working farm, originally part of the château property, is also available for reasonable separate purchase.

Located in Cours, a quiet hamlet 1.5 km (0.93 miles) south of medieval Noyers sur Serein, one of the most beautiful villages in France, the château is currently operating as an established and successful B&B (Chambre d’Hôte) business. Ideally located for tours of the wine country around Chablis and visits to the many châteaux in the area, the château is within an easy drive of many interesting attractions, including Vezelay, the Puisaye region, and the Burgundy canal.

A 15-minute drive from the vineyards of Chablis, and 30 minutes from the nearest TGV station, Paris is only an hour away by train.
